Cast: Bobby Au Yeung, Yoyo Mung, Frankie Lam, Linda Chung

Number of Episodes: 25

Producer: Mui Siu Ching

Themesong by: Frankie Lam

Released Date: June 2006 (HK and overseas)

The Story

The so-called tvb version of CSI, crimes, cases, lab techniques, action…

The Cases

There are some cases I like, some cases I don’t like. The cases which end up with ‘no-killer’ in the end are the ones I don’t really fancy, because they get a little tiresome to watch.

Djfrostbite’s favourites:

- The very first case, where a family of four got murdered. The suspect was not hard to guess, what he/she did was quite unbelievable, but I just enjoyed the whole process, and the end of episode 2 made me high. ~.~

- The serial rapist case, where the victim gets killed with a plastic bag. That man is sure perverted!

- The very last case, which lasted quite some episodes, as it took a few smaller cases to build it up. This case really made me excited. The suspect copies the scenes in Frankie’s novel to kill his/her victims. Many people died in this one, including…

Love Factors

Frankie Lam

I’m quite sure this is the first time I am putting Frankie in my ‘likes’ list, even though I never ‘disliked’ him. Is it Frankie who took so long to show his charm, or me who took so long to notice his charm? Anyway, Doctor Koo is my favourite character in the whole series. He is a smart and professional doctor, who also has his ‘artistic’ side—writing detective novels. In the past, he used to be a not-so-good teenager, but his sister changed him into a different person after one incident. From then on, Frankie is inspired to help all the bad youngsters turn good, and to carry on her sister’s will. One girl he managed to change is Natalie Tong. By the way, I really like the relationship between Frankie and Natalie, even though they are not lovers, even though it is very short-lived. Back to Frankie himself, Frankie is very charismatic in this series, unlike the usual ‘boring’ Frankie. Okay, I think I just repeated myself… Anyway, is this Frankie last series with TVB? It seems so, but I really hope not right now!

Yoyo Mung

Yoyo plays the strong and smart senior inspector in this series. I’m not sure how to describe this but I really like her in this series. When it comes to work, she is strong, and she is stubborn. When it comes to relationships, she is usually passive, but she can also be active at times. o.O Basically, I liked her character and her stylish performance, plus, I think Yoyo is really pretty in this series.

Dislike Factors

Linda Chung

Linda is way too hyper and too unnatural in this series. AND, she and Frankie have NO chemistry together. Their story reminds me of Francis and Myolie’s story in TITS. Myolie was the hyper young girl, Francis was the quiet old man. But comparing Myolie’s performance and Linda’s performance, hehe okay you don’t even want to compare them. ><

Background music

Am I the only one who feels that there are some scenes when the background music and the actions totally do NOT go? I keep feeling that the music is much ‘bigger’ than the scene itself. The best example are the scenes between Linda and Frankie, when Linda sprang-kiss Frankie in the car. They played some kind of circus music. Yeah, what kind of music is that?

Pity Factor: SPOILERS

Natalie Tong:

Natalie was a bad girl who turned over a new leaf. Unfortunately, she did not have much time to live as a good girl. She was murdered indirectly because of someone she admires the most: Frankie. You can consider this a ‘minor’ death, but I felt quite emotional about it …

Comments

The Performance

In Forensic Heroes, there is quite a lot to talk about regarding the performance, basically because there are LOADS of newcomers in this series, playing major or minor roles. Let’s talk about the more familiar ones first. Among them, I liked Yoyo and Frankie’s performance the most, like I mentioned above, one is stylish, one is charming. Bobby is a so-so for me, because I still prefer him as the funny kind. I’m also glad Florence Kwok and Astrid Chan made a come back, but their characters are nothing much to talk about. Hope to see more of them in future.

The Newcomers

Here comes the exciting part. I can divide the newcomers into 4 groups: the good, the neutral, the not-so-good, the horrendous

The Good: Fred Cheng, Natalie Tong, Charmaine Li

Among all the supporting characters, Fred is my favourite. Gosh he is SO cute! He is a smart boy, but too unconfident about himself, and that is what makes him so cute. I think I really like this guy now. Natalie Tong plays a not-so-good character this time, which proves her versatility as an actress. I think she is really talented. Charmaine’s character is pretty deceptive this time round, and her performance is pretty natural for a newcomer. This is the first time I’m watching her act ‘un-dubbed’, meaning, watching her speak Cantonese. I’m surprised what her real voice sounds like, and that is partially why I like her. Hehe

The Neutral: Vivian Yeo + Gang

Comparing the ‘Into Thin Air’ Vivian and the ‘Forensic Heroes’ Vivian, I like Vivian here a lot better. Her performance is acceptable for newcomer standard, and since she played a small role, it is less easy to find flaws. The same goes to the other two boys in Yoyo’s police team. Sometimes, you might even find them cute (not the tall one).

The not-so-good: Linda Chung

TVB is promoting Linda like crazy now, so I still choose to believe that Linda has something to show the audience some day. Forensic Heroes is just not her best piece of work.

The horrendous: Fala Chen

This is Fala’s debut, and she obviously cannot act, and does not possess much talent in acting. That is why her case was quite painful to watch. ><>

The Chemistry

Sadly, I simply can’t find a ‘favourite chemistry’ in the entire series, I’m talking about love chemistries by the way. Frankie and Linda is a big no-no for me, Bobby and Yoyo didn’t make me feel much either. I might pick Frankie and Yoyo instead, for their short lived love story. They were far more matching, and I loved their discussions about ‘oranges’. It cracks me up. Remember when Yoyo starts to like Frankie, and she said, “You are quite an orange”. That was so funny!

Favourite Scenes

- Frankie and Yoyo at the beach, dating. Here is their conversation— (vaguely remember)

Yoyo: I know who the killer in your novel is

Frankie: You finished reading it already?

Yoyo: Nope, I’m only at chapter 3, but I guessed it. The killer is always the most unnoticeable character

Frankie: Really, but what about the delivery boy (something like that), isn’t he unnoticeable as well?

Yoyo: Oh him, we all know that he is just a sidekick la

Frankie: *looks pissed*

- When Natalie died, and Frankie was opening her up, djfrostbite was sad ):

- The whole of the last case, it made me feel very high!

The Story

The story is really exciting at times, and not so interesting at times, but it is easy to get through the boring moments. All in all, I think the plot was not bad at all

Worth watching?

This is quite a good detective story, plus the lab techniques are really interesting to learn about, just do not place any high hopes on the relationship parts, and focus on the cases.

Review- Men In Pain

1-2 weeks ago, I finished watching Men In Pain. Today, after some thought, I decided to write a review for this series, because I'm starting to like writing reviews, and also because this series deserves to have a review written for it... =p

Information:
Title: Men In Pain
Cast: Damian Lau, Ron Ng, Louisa So, Toby Leung
Number Of Episodes: 21
Producer: Poon Ka Tak
Themesong by: -
Sub themesong by: Ron Ng

A few months ago, we had a series called “La Femme Desperado”, today, we have “Men In Pain”. Being a woman is ‘difficult’, being a man is ‘painful’. So, what should we be?

Love Factor

Ron Ng:

Emperor Hong Hei, that is his name. Ron is so useless at the beginning, so sweet at the end, and so adorable from the beginning to the end.

Like-to-mention Factor

“Ben”:

There is this guy in this series, who tries to win Louisa’s heart. His name is “Ah Ben”. He is the guy who plays a baddie/useless jerk in EVERY series he is in. It is good to see that he is moving out of his stereo type, and acted pretty charmingly in this series.

Dislike/Hate Factor

Toby Leung:

As much as I like Ron in this series, I dislike his co-star, Ms Toby Leung. The way Toby smiles is not pretty at all, the way Toby acts is too ‘meek’. (I’m not sure if this is the right word to use. She is just so ‘careful’ with every single line she delivers.) Maybe because I like the story between Hong Hei and Ko Fun, I would want a better actress to bring out its best…

Mr Macho- Rocky Cheng:

His character is worthless, his performance is torturous, his looks are… never mind -.-. This guy can NOT act for nuts. The producers just gave him some lines, which the whole plot can totally do without, but he is so huge, I just cannot ignore his presence…

Rebecca Chan:

This character is SO unreasonable! Anniversary is coming, and everyone is discussing who to win what. The best supporting female list is pretty sad this year, many people are saying Rebecca should win. Yes, I love her performance. But I dislike her character so much, I do not really want her to win. I think I’m getting too emotional haha, but I really pity her husband and son!

The Similarities: “Men” vs “La Femme”

You might think I am crazy to write a review using a TABLE. Maybe I am still in the ‘exam’ mode, and can’t get out of my obsession of drawing tables. Hehe. It eases your reading process anyway, so there…

“La Femme”

The Factor

“Men”

The pain which will haunt every single woman for decades- menstrual pain

The one health problem you will learn about

The pain which might not haunt every single man, but Damian happens to be one of the unlucky ones- impotence, due to the pressure from his job, his blur wife, his insensible son…

Sheren Teng, who wants the baby, doesn’t want the dad =p

The woman who does not believe in marriage

Florence Kwok, who has a boyfriend, and even a child, but simply refuses to get married. Poor Rex L

Melissa Ng, I don’t think she is as blur as Louisa

The blur woman who learns to be independant

Louisa So, I don’t think she is as smart as Melissa, but in a way, she is funnier.

Raymond Lam, who became all stressed-out after marrying a woman older and smarter than him; Why? He wants to show every one that he is smart

The ‘big-boy’ man who doesn’t know what responsibility is, until one day…

Ron Ng, who became all stressed-out as well, after becoming a father all of a sudden. Why? He does not want his child to starve. He wants his family to have a good life. Aww ~.~

Raymond’s mother, who grabs every chance to diss Melissa

The trouble-in-law, who cannot accept the fact that his/her child is married

Toby’s father, who grabs every chance to diss Ron, but I think he is a little nicer than Raymond’s mother

“Lap Sam Hap Po”, the sushi shop

The favourite haunt

“Lap Sam Hap Po”, the sushi shop. Gosh, they even got the same guy to act as the sushi master in both series!

Anyway, this table is NOT here to discourage you from watching Men In Pain. Both LFD and MIP have different story which are great in their own ways. This table is just… for fun ><

Favourite Scenes:

There are quite some great scenes, but I can’t remember them all…

- The two scenes when Ron Ng and Johnson Lee pretend to be gay. HAHA

- A very short scene, when Louisa was struggling with the treadmill, until she was totally hanging on the railing. That was so short, but so funny!

The Comments: Storyline

Before I got past the first 5 episodes, I was actually thinking of giving up the series, because I didn’t find anything about it interesting. It felt very much like a ‘mediacorp family/auntie drama’. (My Singapore readers might/will understand what I am talking about) Afterwards, the story got better, until I found myself totally loving this series. The story was very refreshing and interesting, and you slowly step into the shoes of all the characters. The feeling is great ~.~ BUT, I still cannot understand, why must this series be 21-episode long? The 21st episode was draggy and unnecessary. What were the producers thinking? Isn’t 20 a nicer number?

The Comments: Performance

I think every part of the cast did a great job and created good chemistry with everyone else. All except Toby Leung and Mr Macho.

The Comments: Chemistry

As I have said, the whole cast created good chemistry with one another, from the leading to the supporting. If we’re talking about love relationships, Damian and Louisa did share some great chemistry and memorable scenes together. Ron and Toby is a big no-no for me, mostly due to Toby herself. I can’t believe we are watching them pair up again in the upcoming Sui Yuet Fung Wan. Are Ron fans willing to give her another chance?

The Verdict:

This series IS worth watching.

"The weather might not be as ideal, but I still have to fly"

Series: Triumph In The Skies
Title: 岁月如歌
Sung By: Eason Chan

爱上了看见你如何不懂谦卑
去讲心中理想不会俗气
犹如看得见晨曦才能欢天喜地
抱着你我每次回来多少惊喜 (Carrying you, every time, brings many surprises
也许一生太短陪着你 maybe too little time in this life to be with you- sounds like Sam and Zoe's story eh?)

情感有若行李仍然沉重待我整理 (Relationships are like my baggage, heavy, waiting for me to tidy them up)
*天气不似如期但要走总要飞 (The weather might not be as ideal, but want to leave, have to fly)
道别不可再等你不管有没有机 (Can no longer wait for you, whether or not there are flights)
给我体贴入微但你手如明日便要远离
愿你可以留下共我曾愉快的忆记
当世事再没完美可远在岁月如歌中找你*
再见了背向你回头多少伤悲
也许不必再讲所有道理
何时放松我自己才能花天酒地
抱着你我说过如何一起高飞 ( Carrying you, I said before, how to fly high together)
这天只想带走还是你 (Heaven only wants to take you away)

如重温往日邮寄但会否疲倦了嬉戏

Enjoy the song! (:

TV Prescription

Have you ever had the feeling, when you watch a certain program the first time, you felt that it is not-so-good, but months later, when you watch it again, you find yourself enjoying it a lot? I had it many times =p I have also felt the opposite way before. So what is the reason? After much thought, I realised that it may not be the quality of the production after all. It might be us, the audience, who are always changing, every day, every hour...

Djfrostbite's hypothesis: (I don't even want to call these theories, I'm more or less guessing =p)
- Your mind is continuous maturing, especially during your teen years. Try watching a tvb series in say, 2005, and then watch it again in 2006. The feeling might be totally different. You might start to appreciate the scenes you never did, and hate the cheesy scenes you never used to hate.
- If you watch too much TV for a period of time (Let's say 3-4 tvb series back to back), you will get sick of the WATCHING itself, soon, even though what you are watching is somewhat interesting.
- If you have slacked for the entire day, you will NOT enjoy whatever things you are watching in the night, UNLESS, it is something educational, like a historical drama (aka the Conqueror's Story).
- If you are watching something together with someone, you will feel happier watching it
- If you are watching something together with someone, WITH the intention of "converting her into a fan" or whatsoever, you will NOT enjoy it as much, because you will probably feel stressed up instead. Sometimes, he or she might end up converting you into an "anti-fan" instead ><
- If you have worked REASONABLY hard for the day, you will enjoy the things you are watching at night

Okay, these are purely based on what I observed from myself and some people around me. It might be somewhat true, it might sound totally absurd to you. I am not a psychologist after all. I am just a tvb fan who likes to think about watching tvb more than watching tvb itself. Hehe. ANYWAY, the hypothesis above does NOT apply to the TERRIBLE series tvb produced. The first thing which comes into my mind is Split Second, The Herbalist Manual, and serveral episodes of different series here and there. If the script is horrible, it just wouldn't work, no matter what 'state of mind' the audience is in. ><

Djfrostbite's prescription:
- weekdays: 1 hour of tvb/tv per day, nothing more than 2 hours
- weekends: You can go up to 3-4 per day during weekends, but try to make your freetime more than just tv (:

Conclusion: TV watching is a pretty passive activity (unless you are a film reviewer or something), but it is a good relaxation for the body and the mind. Just remember, watch TV to live, don't live to watch TV =p

Chilam look alike

I was browsing through winter stargirl's blog: http://www.the-beehive.blogspot.com/ and I found this really interesting picture of Kevin and erm... Raymond. Look carefully, doesn't Raymond resemble Chilam Cheung? This thought has never occurred to me before. Is it because of the hair? Or the recent change in face shape...

Talking about face-shape, I think Raymond's face is chaging shape (again -.-). That's the power of celebrities, male or female. They can look like two different persons at two different times. But I don't know if it is good or bad la. Basically, I think Raymond is looking skinner and skinner... (while I am turning fatter and fatter >.< style="text-align: center;">

tada
